A Closer Look at the Tango

The tango is a dance that originates from southern America, and although now used as a very broad description for a few dance styles, its original roots are still heralded today. The style itself has influences from European and African dance styles, and was mainly formed in Buenos Aires around the times that slavery was prevalent. Because of its more modern label as ‘the’ Latin dance style, you may be surprised that it was originally the dance of the lower classes. Over time the style has evolved and become fused in popular culture. The dance has even been entered in to the register of heritage in some Southern American countries.
